Nassau, The Bahamas, April 29, 2020 – Colina Insurance Limited sponsored today’s national blood drive in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA). The event was held in response to the urgent appeal for blood at the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

“Colina is pleased to partner with health officials on the national blood drive,” said Maxine Seymour, Director, Corporate Communications, Colina Insurance Limited. “The level of participation is reassuring, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic at a time when most people are staying at home.”

“Once we heard about the Drive we immediately agreed to support this critical event,” said Seymour. “Medical scientists are amazing but they are still unable to manufacture blood and platelets so volunteer blood donors are life-saving heroes”.

The Bahamas’ Health Minister, Dr. Duane Sands and Colina’s Manager of Customer Service, Lavaughn Fernander, were among persons donating blood to replenish PMH’s supplies. Organizers fell slightly short of their target to raise 100 units of blood, acquiring 97 instead.

Blood donated will assist in the hospital’s response when treating accident victims, cancer patients, hemophiliacs and surgery patients. The National Blood Drive was held at the entrance lobby at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium. Physical distancing policies were enforced with donors and staffers wearing protective equipment and maintaining a safe distance.
